NEUFCHATEAU
WAR MEMORIAL OF NEUFCHÂTEAU
Description
Erected in memory of the people of Neufchâteau who died during the Great War, the war memorial in the centre of the Place des Cordeliers was inaugurated on 25 April 1925. Originally, the names of 149 men who fell during the war were listed on it. Other names were added later, in particular those of people of Neufchâteau who died during the Second World War.
This monument is the work of Emile Just Bachelet: born in Nancy, this artist who studied Fine Arts in Paris and Nancy was declared unfit for active service during the war. He was mobilised as a nurse in a military hospital in Troyes and then in Lure, where he drew and made busts of wounded soldiers. He was responsible for many war memorials erected in Lorraine, including those in Badonviller, Bois-le-Prêtre, Epinal, Pont-à-Mousson, Remiremont, Toul and Vézelise.
