Description

Admire this 16th-century Gothic mantelpiece, which illustrates the region's rich religious tradition. On one side, Christ stands opposite a Virgin and Child, while the octagonal shaft is adorned with Gothic arcatures. It houses several saints: Saint Peter, patron saint of Remiremont, Saint Paul, Saint Sebastian, Saint Bartholomew, Saint Nicolas of Lorraine, as well as a bishop, Saint James and Saint Andrew, patron saints of Franche-Comté.

Beneath Saint Peter, a kneeling woman, probably the donor, bears witness to the devotion of the time. Listed as a historic monument since September 16, 1908, this cross is one of 145 in the Val-d'Ajol, three of which are protected. It is also part of the most important Way of the Cross in Christendom.
