REMIREMONT

STREET CHARLES DE GAULLE

Description

The main artery of the city, lined with 16th, 17th and 18th century arches and witnessing a bygone era, they are unique and each have different shapes: sometimes the arch is narrow and semi-circular, sometimes of medium width and low, sometimes wide and basket-shaped, which means that they are all different. They have kept their commercial vocation and magnify the rue Charles de Gaulle - still the main shopping street of the city - with flowers in summer or lights in winter.

At the entrance to the street is the bronze statue of the Volunteer, the work of sculptor Chopin. It was erected in 1899 to mark the 110th anniversary of the French Revolution and to remind us that the Remiremont district had provided a very large number of soldiers for the defence of the young republic and the country in danger.
