BUSSANG
THE STATUE OF SAINTE BARBE
Description
During the liberation of the village in 1944, two air bombs strucked the church, all the windows were broken. All,
except the church window with Saint “Barbe”, which was miraculously spared ...The inhabitants of Bussang, at the instigation of the priest "Vaché", expressed this oath :"If Bussang is spared, we will erect a statue of Saint “Barbe” on the highest mountain of Bussang to show our gratefulness". It turned out that Bussang had not suffered too much. After the war, the inhabitants gathered copper, bronze and other materials to make this statue. The inauguration took place on 3rd October 1948. The Statue is only reachable per foot! A hiking trail leads you from the village centre to the statue, it climbs a little but the view on the village is worth the effort! A sheet with the way to access it can be downloaded below. The IGN 3619 map is on sale at the tourist office for more details.
